Programs & Activities: Stepping Stones Certificate
We offer a certificate program for those interested in an in depth
immersion in teacher training and a look at educational roles. Both faculty and non faculty members are welcome to enrol. The program fee is $600 for faculty in the
Faculty of Medicine and $800 for those without a faculty appointment with the Faculty of Medicine at UofT. Registration is required. Program objectives and
criteria are listed below.
Program Objectives
After participating in the Stepping Stones Certificate Program, participants
should be able to:
- describe several evidence-based strategies for teaching in a variety of
clinical contexts
- describe some of the theoretical basis for clinical teaching strategies
- demonstrate newly acquired teaching skills
- demonstrate enhanced critical appraisal skills of the health professional education
literature
- acquire a positive attitude towards implementing and initiating change in
clinical teaching
- identify the ways in which scholarship can be introduced into teaching and education activities
- describe a strategy for implementation of their own career development plan
Program Criteria
- Candidates are expected to participate in at least 26
hours of Centre for Faculty Development workshops over
two academic years.
Candidates may accumulate these hours by registering and participating in
workshops listed under the "Workshops" link to the left of your screen.
- Candidates must also accumulate an additional
14 hours of training over one academic year by participating in a
at least 7 out of 9 monthly, teaching and learning theory journal club sessions organized by the Centre.
Journal Club Information
- Journal Club participants review a wide array of
health professional education literature pertinent to all levels of the
teaching experience - undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education.
They are expected to review specific journal articles for each meeting
and come prepared to discuss the articles, as well as complete 2 graded
assignments over the course of the year.
- 2011-2012 assignments will include an Annotated
Bibliography, due at the February session, and an Application to Practice
Paper, due in June (short paper about your experience in the program).
Participants will be provided with a sample annotated bibliography and more
detailed criteria for these assignments by their assigned Journal Club leader.
- 2011-2012 journal club sessions will take place
once a month from Oct '11 - June '12.
